What is a channel manager?

Hotel channel management software is used in hospitality to update multiple online booking sites automatically every time a change in availability, pricing, or stay restriction occurs.

What's the difference between a channel manager and a PMS system?

While a channel manager distributes inventory across sales channels, a PMS is the control system used by hoteliers and hosts to organize and execute operations and day-to-day activities, such as reservation management, guest communication, housekeeping, pricing, and more. A single platform that incorporates both PMS and channel management, like Cloudbeds, simplifies managing inventory, rates, and reservations.

What does a channel manager do?

A channel manager system will update your property’s distribution data (room availability and rates) across all the channels you connect to in real time. Its functionality lets technology complete the update for you whenever there’s a booking or cancellation.

The best channel managers use two-way sync via XML to connect to each channel’s extranet and import reservations/cancellations into your Channel Manager, PMS, and/or CRS dashboard. API connections are best since they allow data to flow seamlessly and accurately across systems that may be owned and operated by different companies. There are also iCal, or calendar-based, channel connections. However, even if the iCal connection is two-way, calendar channels are only able to connect to one room type at a time.

Why do hotels need a channel manager?

Hotels, and even short-term rentals, can benefit from using a channel manager because they eliminate the need to update your availability, rates, and inventory manually, saving you time and increasing your opportunity to get more bookings by allowing you to easily manage more channels.
